About Us

Whitworth Amateur Musical & Dramatic Society (WAMDS) has been bringing the magic of theatre to the Rossendale and Rochdale communities since 1963. We’re a warm, welcoming group made up of performers, creatives, technicians, and theatre lovers who all come together to put on great shows and have fun doing it. Whether you're interested in being on stage or working behind the scenes, there's always a place for you at WAMDS.

We currently produce three shows a year: two musicals and one pantomime, with rehearsals and events taking place at our home base, St John’s Church Hall in Facit, Whitworth. On average, over 50 volunteers take part in each production, and our performances attract around2-3,000 audience members annually.

Our History

WAMDS was founded in 1963 to bring musical theatre to Whitworth. Since then, we’ve staged over 100 musicals, plays, and pantomimes and have become a key part of the local arts scene. In 2016, we took over St John’s Church Hall, a former school and community venue, transforming it into our creative home.

Now a 120 seat auditorium, WAMDS has constantly invested in the building, its technical infrastructure and creative programme breathing new life into a heritage building.

The hall  has a rich heritage and back story, and was the focus of our "Back to the Schoolroom" project, which celebrated its history through community-led research, exhibitions, and performances. Thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and volunteers and community partners, we’ve improved access, facilities, and programming, making it a space used by everyone, from theatre-goers to local bands and schools.

Why We Love What We Do

Why We Love What We Do

Back in 2018, WAMDS  revived our annual pantomime at St John’s Church Hall with a small but mighty cast of 15 (including the director!). Seven years later, we now welcome casts of 30+, and the magic has only grown stronger. Our pantos are full of laughs, heart, and extra skits to ensure everyone gets their moment in the spotlight.

Our sold-out shows  are a testament to the passion and joy our community brings to each performance. Whether you're grabbing tarts, dodging potions, or falling down the rabbit hole with Alice, one thing is guaranteed: you're in for a great time.

Thank you for supporting WAMDS. We can't wait to welcome you through the doors of St John’s and into our wonderful theatre family!
